This plant, which is a native of Asia, also appreciates mountainous regions and sandy or gravely soils. It has a purple-grey bark with a tendency to exfoliate, with robust acidulous leaves, and yellow and red flowers that come out in spring. Its fruit consists of an oval-shaped cone measuring about 7.5 cm in length, which becomes hard and brown upon maturity.
